    Description

    This is a Claret Jug.
    The metalwork is Silver Plate
    It was made around 1895.
This is a beautiful Antique Claret Jug by W & R, Carlton Ware, Peony pattern No. 290283 with a silver metal lid & handle.  It weighs one pound, 10.9 ounces.
Made by Wiltshaw & Robinson at Stoke On Trent in England from 1890 to 1990, this Carlton Ware Claret pot is almost 10 inches high. It is about 6 inches wide at the widest point and sits on a base of about 3 inches. The top opening is a little smaller than that.
This Peony pattern is old, 1895.  This particular type of Carlton Ware is called Blush Ware. Not long after its formation, about 1890, Wiltshaw & Robinson introduced a highly successful range of earthen wares, now called Blush Ware. This name aptly describes the delicate pastel shaded backgrounds to patterns, either printed or freehand.
The quality of some of these wares is very high, and, in the style of the time, W&R employed many elaborate shapes, often adorned with sumptuous gilding, including raised gold.
This pot has some dark gold paint trimming on the pot.
The lid and the handle seem to be made from silver but they are silver plated.  There are many different stamps and shapes on the lid, including a couple of crests and a snake and the number "6571".  In one area near the center of the lid I can see the word "Italy" and the number "5."  The finish of the silver is tarnished, just like sterling silver plate would do.
In any case, this  pot is an antique.  Made in 1895, It is well over 100 years old.  It has some nice crazing on the bottom, and the lid and handle hardware appears to be made of silver plared metal.
There are no chips or cracks in this beautiful functioning claret pot.
