Description
The ability of Powermatic 143 Band saw to operate at high speeds in order to cut wood and low speeds to cut metal are what make this saw so popular and hard to find. Its 2-Speed Gearbox, along with two stepped pulleys, allow the band saw to have a blade speed of between 40 and 3,000 surface feet per minute without the use of a VFD.I acquired the disassembled band saw from the estate auction of a gentleman who build circuit boards and electrical enclosures to provide parts for my own Powermatic 143 restoration.
Condition: The gearbox appears to be in working order as it turns nicely by hand, and shifts as expected, I haven't driven it with a motor. The output drive shaft has been buggered up, evidently by someone driving a set-screw into the shaft without the key in place. The original shift knob is missing. The case has been apart at some point in the past because there is blue silicone sealant evident at the case halves, which isn't original. I have drained the oil from the unit for shipping purposes, and it will need the drain plug reinserted and 1 1/2 pints of 40 weight added before operating.
I don't have the experience / knowledge to advise those who are wanting to convert their Powermatic 141 wood band saw to a 143 metal / wood band saw. Obviously the 2-speed gearbox is a significant part of the conversion, but I don't know what else might be needed.

The last picture shows the gear box tightly fitting into a reinforced USPS box. As the gearbox weights ~ 55# it will ship with the slower but somewhat cheaper USPS Parcel Select Ground. You may also pick it up this Gearbox in Tulsa Oklahoma to save all shipping cost.
